Regular oral maintenance visits are an important part of mainting your oral health. Visiting regularly, gives us an opportunity to detect decay and irregularities at an early stage, which then allows us to come up with the best possible plan to prevent further damage, and ultimately fix the problem. By discovering oral problems early on, treatment options are much less invasive and much more cost effective.
Dental Exams & Professional Teeth Cleanings
During your maintenance visit, we will:
- Perform a thorough teeth cleaning, in which we will clean, polish, and rinse your teeth to remove any tartar and plaque that has built up.
- Review current X-rays and look for cavities or any other signs of tooth decay
- Inspect your teeth and gums for gingivitis and signs of periodontal disease
- Check for any problems that you may not see or feel
- Perform an oral cancer screening
- Address and concerns and/or questions you may have about your oral health
Because our practice is dedicated to providing you with the safest and most convenient treatment options available, we utilize advanced digital X-ray technology in our office. Digital X-rays provide several advanced imaging options designed to save time, provide clearer photos, and expose you to less radiation than traditional X-ray technology. Depending on your oral health state and history, we will provide an X-ray Frequency Plan for you.
Fluoride is effective in preventing cavities and tooth decay and in preventing plaque from building up and hardening on the tooth’s surface. A fluoride treatment in our office takes just a few minutes. After the treatment, you will be asked not to eat or drink anything hot for 2 hours, in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health, we will recommend that you have a fluoride treatment every three, four, six, or 12 months.
Oral Cancer Screening
Like many kinds of cancer, oral cancer can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early. Because we are dedicated not only to your smile, but also to you overall wellness, we perform an oral cancer screening as a part of your regular exam.We have the skills and tools to ensure that early signs and symptoms of oral cancer and pre-cancerous conditions are identified. While these symptoms may be caused by other, less serious problems, it is very important to visit our office to rule out the possibility of oral cancer. The most common symptoms of oral cancer include:
Red or white spots or sores anywhere in the oral cavity
A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal
A lump, thickening, or rough spot
Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips
Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue
Our team is trained in a simple, quick screening that involves an examination of your oral cavity as a whole, and not just your teeth, to detect cancerous and precancerous conditions. Besides a visual examination of your mouth, we will also feel the tissue of your mouth and throat to detect any abnormalities. If we find an area of concern, we may perform a simple test, such as a brush test, which collects cells from a suspicious lesion in the mouth to be sent to a laboratory for analysis.
